• Was born in Grinnell, Iowa in 1957

 • Grew up in Brooklyn, Iowa

 • Got his first job in 3rd grade, delivering papers for the Des Moines Tribune.   

 • Graduated from BGM High School. He played football and baseball for the Bears.

 • Worked hard to put himself through college and law school - baling hay, detassling, driving dump trucks, waiting tables and highway maintenance.

 • Is a Cyclone! He graduated from Iowa State in 1980.

 • ...and a Hawkeye! He graduated from Iowa Law School in 1983.

 • Married Carolyn Kalb, of Dubuque, in 1983.

 • Worked as an attorney in Waterloo, Iowa for 23 years.

 • Was named "Couple of the Year" with Carolyn by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northeastern Iowa.

 • Lives in Waterloo, Iowa with his wife and children: Lisa, David, Paul.
